In order to keep our vehicles in ”good health” it is good to carry out the correct maintenance to our car. In this particular case we are not referring to the revisions required by law or coupons, but to all those minimum checks that will make our car safer and more efficient.
It’s important to remember that the more your car is checked out, the less you’ll spend on both parts and trips to your local gas station.
Keeping an eye on the mileage and the corresponding expiry dates in the coupons booklet or the various warning lights and alerts on the on-board computer is obviously something not to be underestimated.
Having said that, we can summarize the various controls in 4 basic points:
Car Tire Maintenance and Pressure
Checks should be carried out when the tyres are cold, especially before long journeys. The values are always listed in the owner’s manual and can vary depending on how heavily the vehicle is loaded. With tire pressure sensors, it is important to remember to zero the values once the tires are pressurised, because the signal that reaches the control unit is the one that measures wheel speed. If the car has to remain stationary for a long time, it is a good idea to inflate the tires a few tenths of a bar more, so as to avoid ovalization of the tires. In addition, in Italy it is mandatory to use winter tires from 15 November to 15 April, so make sure that those fitted are suitable for driving. If not, you must have snow chains on board.
Liquid Maintenance and Level Control
To properly maintain your car, it is a good idea to check the oil level at least once a month and, if necessary, top it up using the same oil already circulating in the engine. To do this is very simple: remove the dipstick and clean it with a cloth. Reinsert the dipstick all the way and then remove it, checking the oil level, which must always be between the two minimum and maximum marks. On gasoline cars you can tell if it’s time to change the oil depending on the color, the more the color is tending to black, the greater the need to change oil and filter.
Also important is the coolant level. Normally this is indicated by a warning light on the dashboard in case the level is low, but it is always better to have a look to avoid problems.
Especially in this period, where we can use our cars less and less, it is good not to let the charge drop completely in order not to compromise the functioning of the battery. To solve this problem it is useful to keep the car on for a few minutes so that the alternator charges the battery. The best solution would be to buy a charge maintainer that recharges the battery only when necessary without turning on the car and avoiding to ruin it unnecessarily with ignitions of few minutes.
An optimal car maintenance also involves the replacement of this piece often underestimated even by professional mechanics, it is useful to check and replace it regularly to breathe better air in our cabin. Obviously, the particles that accumulate depend on the areas in which you circulate. If you often drive along dusty roads or cities with a high level of pollution, the filter will clog up sooner and not do its job properly. It is generally located in the engine compartment at the base of the windscreen or in the passenger compartment under the glove box. To replace it, simply remove the cover, remove the old filter and insert the new one.
